I would like to show to you my tables made out of concrete. Concrete is an amazing material, it’s been used since the romans and it is the stone made by the humans. We can mold it and produce any shape out of it having a great resistance.

I made these tables 1 x 1 x 0.5 m. They are perfect for outdoor conditions. Composed by a structure made on steel, the concrete piece and a glass on top. The concrete is a special one called ultra high performance concrete. Mixed with glass fibers gets great resistance properties that allowed to me to design those very thin nerves. What it’s very light regarding a concrete structure.

I was prototyping different patterns trying to arrive to the minimum thickness. I could make a piece with just 8mm thick. It was very nice to arrive to that lightness with a heavy material, you could hold it just with three fingers but it was to fragile, so I Ieft it as sculpture as it had broken as a table.

The mold is the key, as you can draw any pattern and the concrete will get that shape. I designed different patterns and I draw them by a digital machine on the molds. I didn’t like this part, as the material I used was creating a lot of waste and I spent more time cleaning than fabricating. Releasing the mold was one of the hardest works I ever had. So because of this, I stop until I could make this process more sustainable.

 

Here the production of molds. I made so many designs, but I could only fill with concrete the ones for the tables. I hope to take this technique again soon, and make it on a cleaner way.
